India Condemns Pakistan Airstrikes On Afghanistan At UN Security Council
India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, condemned Pakistan's airstrikes inside Afghanistan, saying they killed women and children and violated international law. He made the remarks on Wednesday, December 10, during a UN Security Council session on Afghanistan.
Harish expressed deep concern over what he called Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism and repeated closure of border access, which he said further isolates landlocked Afghanistan and hampers its reconstruction efforts.
He added that military actions against a vulnerable, rebuilding nation represent“a clear breach of the UN Charter and international humanitarian norms.” India reaffirmed its commitment to Afghanistan's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, highlighting that regional stability depends on these principles.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's UN representative countered that Afghanistan, under Taliban control, has become a safe haven for militant groups targeting Pakistan. Islamabad described the strikes as defensive measures against cross-border attacks.
India rejected these claims, emphasizing that attacks harming civilians cannot be justified and warning that such escalation risks destabilizing the wider region.
The Council also stressed that Afghanistan's long-term stability requires regional cooperation, respect for human rights, and accountability for any cross-border aggression.
Analysts say the dispute underscores ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan over security in South Asia, with Afghanistan caught in the middle of the competing agendas.
The Council urged all parties to prioritize humanitarian considerations, ensure safe access for aid, and seek peaceful resolution through dialogue to prevent further conflict.
