Public Holiday Powers Lie With Centre: CM Omar
J&K CM Omar Abdullah
Srinagar- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the authority to declare public holidays in Jammu and Kashmir lies with the Central government, underlining the current limitations of the Union Territory's elected administration.
Responding to discussions around declaring an official holiday to commemorate National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Omar said the late leader's legacy is cherished by the people with or without a government order.
“Sheikh Abdullah lives in the hearts of the people regardless of whether there is an official holiday or not,” he told reporters.
ADVERTISEMENTReaffirming his party's long standing demand, Omar stressed the immediate need for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He said only a fully empowered elected government can take independent decisions on matters like public holidays and administrative policies.
