Cold and dry weather in Peshawar has led to a continuous rise in influenza cases, with health authorities warning of increased vulnerability among residents.

According to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department, 30 to 40 percent of the province's population contracts influenza each year, most of them belonging to rural areas.

This year, hospitals are reporting a significant increase in patients suffering from flu, cough, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while children are also being affected alongside adults.

Health experts said influenza is a viral disease that spreads through cough, fever and sneezing, and the dry weather makes the virus more active.

They added that the absence of rainfall and extremely dry atmospheric conditions have worsened symptoms for asthma, pneumonia and chronic respiratory patients.

Doctors noted that a large proportion of hospital visitors include children and elderly citizens.

Experts emphasized that individuals with weak immune systems should get vaccinated during this season, as the influenza vaccine not only prevents seasonal illnesses but also reduces the risks of complications associated with cold weather.
