Trump claims Putin still seeks to end Ukraine war
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains interested in ending the conflict in Ukraine.
“He would like to end the war. That's what their impression was…Their impression was very strongly that he’d like to make a deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House, referring to discussions held by his special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law and informal adviser Jared Kushner.
The remarks followed a meeting in Moscow on Tuesday between Putin, Witkoff, and Kushner, during which they discussed Washington’s updated draft peace plan for Ukraine. Trump said he spoke with the two envoys that evening and described the meeting as “reasonably good.”
He added that he could not predict the outcome, emphasizing that “it does take two to tango.”
Trump also asserted that the war would never have started if he were president.
Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov commented Wednesday that the US appears willing to consider Russia’s perspective in seeking a settlement. “The mood is positive. The Americans are ready to make every effort to achieve a long-term settlement which, in fact, meets our goals,” Ushakov told reporters.
