(MENAFN) The anticipated meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Europe has been called off, with the officials returning to the United States, according to media sources.

Zelensky had previously indicated that he expected updates from the US delegation following its high-stakes discussions in the Kremlin regarding a peace initiative for Ukraine.

On Tuesday, a journalist initially reported, citing insiders, that “Zelensky is slated to meet in Brussels tonight” with the US representatives.

However, several hours later, he announced a shift in plans, stating that “the Brussels meeting is called off” and that “Zelensky is returning home,” without providing further details about the cancellation.

A flight reportedly carrying Witkoff made no stopovers in the European Union after departing Russia, heading straight back to the United States, a news agency reported, referencing a European air-traffic source.

Earlier, a media outlet had also noted that Witkoff was scheduled to meet Zelensky and provide updates on his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian president said he had anticipated communication from Witkoff and Kushner, implying that if the Kremlin negotiations succeeded, he might soon meet with Trump.

The US president had previously declined meetings with both Zelensky and Putin until a peace agreement neared completion.

The apparent cancellation coincided with remarks from Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, who stated that the American delegation had assured Moscow that they would return to Washington following the Kremlin talks rather than continuing on to Kiev.
