Indonesia on Alert as More Rainfall Expected After Sumatra Flooding

(MENAFN) Indonesia's meteorological authority has warned of incoming rainfall across widespread areas of the nation on Monday, as catastrophic flooding and landslides in Sumatra continue to claim lives and displace hundreds of thousands.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) released the weather alert following documented increases in precipitation throughout multiple regions, with numerous urban centers facing threats of severe weather conditions, according to media.

The country's National Disaster Management Agency reported Sunday that fatalities from the devastating Sumatra floods and landslides have surged to 442, while 402 individuals remain unaccounted for.

Rescue operations entered their sixth consecutive day as emergency crews press forward in affected zones, desperately searching for those still missing, the agency confirmed.

Official statistics reveal a staggering human toll: 646 wounded, 1.1 million residents impacted by the disaster, extensive residential destruction, and over 290,000 people forced from their homes due to floodwaters.

Access to numerous devastated communities remains blocked, forcing search teams to deploy both ground personnel and aerial units. However, the rugged landscape is severely restricting deployment of heavy equipment needed for recovery operations.
