An Indian man who once worked as a waiter in Dubai has been arrested in Punjab for allegedly conspiring with gangsters to carry out shootings at a restaurant owned by comedian Kapil Sharma in Canada, Indian media reported on Saturday.

Kapil Sharma, one of India's most famous comic entertainers and the face of The Kapil Sharma Show, is a regular performer in the UAE, drawing large expatriate crowds at his shows in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. His restaurant, Kap's Cafe is located in Ontario, Canada.

According to The Indian Express, the Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested 28-year-old Bandhu Man Singh Sekhon from his hometown of Ludhiana on November 25 for allegedly helping plan shootings at Sharma's cafe in July and August this year. The Crime Branch reportedly recovered a pistol and eight live cartridges from him.

Citing Delhi Police officials, the report said Sekhon completed his Master's in Computer Applications in Punjab before travelling to Dubai in 2018, where he worked briefly as a waiter. He returned to India within months and later moved to Canada in 2023, working first as a pharmacist and then as a ride-hailing driver.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav was quoted as saying that Sekhon is believed to be a close associate of gangster Goldy Dhillon, who has claimed responsibility for three shootings at Kap's Café on July 10, August 7 and October 16, allegedly as part of an extortion bid.

The Indian Express reported that Sekhon had been arrested in Canada in March in an extortion case, fitted with a GPS anklet, and later released. Police sources cited in the report said he lived in Brampton and drove for Uber, during which he allegedly came into contact with Dhillon's network.

Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) Surender Kumar said Sekhon later became a“key operative”, allegedly arranging vehicles and weapons for the gang's shooters in Canada before fleeing to India following a crackdown by Surrey Police. The investigation is ongoing.
