Severe flooding hit Thailand, killing one hundred sixty two people

(MENAFN) The number of people killed in the severe flooding sweeping southern Thailand has risen to 162, with more than one million households nationwide feeling the impact, local media reported on Saturday.

According to Thai PBS, government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that Songkhla province remains the hardest hit, with fatalities there increasing to 126. Other southern provinces have also reported losses: nine deaths in Nakhon Si Thammarat, four in Phatthalung, two in Trang, five in Satun, seven in Pattani, five in Yala, and four in Narathiwat.

The floods, described as the most destructive the region has seen in 25 years, left thousands stranded in their homes throughout the week. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has vowed that financial compensation will be provided to the families of all victims.

On Thursday, Teerapat Kachamat, director general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said that 105 districts across nine southern provinces were still inundated, affecting more than 1.07 million households and over 2.9 million people.

Emergency workers have been deployed to help evacuate residents and deliver essential supplies, including food, drinking water, mobile kitchens, water purification systems, and rescue boats.

Earlier in the week, Anutin declared a state of emergency in Songkhla. The country’s Royal Thai Armed Forces supreme commander has been appointed to oversee and coordinate the national response efforts.
