(MENAFN) At least 31 people have died and 14 more are missing in Sri Lanka following intense flooding and landslides over the past two weeks, local reports said Thursday.

Rescue operations are ongoing as heavy rainfall, rising floodwaters, and continuing landslides since November 17 have disrupted life across multiple districts. The Disaster Management Center reported that more than 4,000 residents in 17 districts have been severely affected, with 10 people injured during this period.

The Batticaloa district has recorded over 300 millimeters of rainfall, an unusually high total for such a short span. A persistent low-pressure system over the island continues to produce strong winds and repeated heavy rainfall.

Authorities have issued red-alert landslide warnings for eight high-risk districts, emphasizing the severe danger to hillside communities, steep slopes, and other vulnerable areas. Residents in these zones have been urged to stay vigilant, limit travel, and prepare for immediate evacuation if necessary.
