Starmer says parts of US-Ukraine peace plan “not acceptable”

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told MPs on Tuesday that certain elements of a leaked 28-point US peace proposal for Ukraine are “not acceptable,” while acknowledging that other parts are “essential” for reaching a viable settlement.

In a Commons statement, Starmer emphasized the importance of achieving a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine, stressing that both terms—just and lasting—must guide any agreement. He said he had consulted international leaders about the conflict and outlined what he called “fundamental principles,” including that “Ukraine’s sovereignty must be maintained and that Ukraine should be able to defend itself in the future.” He added that “Ukraine’s voice must be heard” and that any resolution “will need the consent of NATO.”

When questioned about proposals in the leaked plan calling for Ukraine to surrender territory it currently holds, Starmer said such a notion is “so obviously unacceptable it shouldn’t be seen as a serious proposition.” He warned that Russia continues to pose a security threat to the UK, citing the recent interception of two Russian ships in British waters.

Starmer also highlighted the human cost of the conflict, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “illegal actions” have caused massive casualties. “Thousands of Russian soldiers are killed every single day -- 100,000 have been killed attacking Donetsk. In total, more than one million Russians have been killed or injured because of the depraved ambition of one man,” he said.

The prime minister additionally addressed domestic concerns over pro-Russia influence.

Responding to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, he praised her support and referenced the jailing of Nathan Gill, former leader of Reform UK in Wales, who received a 10½-year sentence for accepting bribes to promote a pro-Russia stance in the media. Starmer called the case “extraordinary” and urged Reform UK leadership to investigate potential remaining links. He warned that any organization with a pro-Putin approach should have “absolutely no role in bringing allies together on important issues.”
