Trump’s DOGE gets quietly disbanded ahead of schedule
(MENAFN) The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), launched by President Donald Trump in January as a high-profile effort to reduce federal waste and bureaucracy, has quietly been disbanded, Reuters reported on Sunday—eight months ahead of its scheduled closure.
The agency, which initially drew attention for its ambitious goals and for appointing tech mogul Elon Musk as “government efficiency czar,” has had many of its functions absorbed by the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the federal human resources office. When asked about DOGE’s status, OPM Director Scott Kupor reportedly said, “That doesn’t exist,” noting that the agency is no longer a centralized entity. Key DOGE staff have now been reassigned to other government departments.
The Trump administration has not formally announced the early disbandment, though the president has reportedly begun referring to DOGE in the past tense. Signs of the agency’s uncertain future began emerging in June following a public dispute between Trump and Musk over the president’s flagship “big, beautiful bill,” which led Musk to step down and leave Washington.
Prior to its closure, DOGE faced legal challenges over its budget-cutting initiatives, which sought to eliminate hundreds of thousands of federal positions. By September, the White House reportedly began rehiring many employees who had been laid off under DOGE’s efficiency drives.
The abrupt end of DOGE underscores the challenges of implementing sweeping government reform and raises questions about the feasibility of high-profile, politically driven efficiency initiatives in the federal bureaucracy.
