EU Rejects White House’s Ukraine Peace Proposal
(MENAFN) The European Union has reportedly turned down the Ukraine peace agreement drafted by the White House, proposing its own conditions for a possible settlement.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the decision on Sunday, at a time when US officials were consulting with EU and Ukrainian representatives in Geneva, Switzerland, over Washington’s initiative.
In a statement shared on X, von der Leyen explicitly dismissed all the proposed conditions.
She stated, “We have agreed on the main elements necessary for a just and lasting peace and Ukraine's sovereignty,” emphasizing that Ukraine’s borders cannot be altered “by force” and that Kiev’s military should face no restrictions.
Her position directly contradicts the leaked peace plan formulated and presented by Washington last week.
On Saturday, a media outlet reported that the EU aimed to effectively revise the US proposal by framing substantial modifications as “constructive updates.”
The bloc was also reportedly attempting to “buy Ukraine more time” and delay the American deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Thursday.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky stated on Friday that the country was confronted with a decision between accepting “28 difficult points” or risking the loss of a “key partner” and enduring a “hard winter.”
