India Expands Diplomatic Reach with New Consulates in Russia

(MENAFN) Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated new Indian consulates in Kazan and Ekaterinburg on Wednesday.

His visit to Russia coincides with the Council of Heads of Government meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and serves as preparation for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forthcoming trip to India in December.

“The opening of the consulate [s] will give an impetus to enable and to strengthen the technological, scientific, economic, and trade collaboration between Indian and Russian industries,” Jaishankar stated, emphasizing the role of these missions in boosting bilateral cooperation.

This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to widen its diplomatic presence across Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

India already maintains consulates in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, in addition to its embassy located in Moscow.

Jaishankar highlighted Ekaterinburg’s strategic relevance as the capital of the Sverdlovsk region within Russia’s industrial framework, referring to it as commonly regarded as the nation’s “third capital” and an essential gateway to Siberia.

He noted the area’s strengths in heavy engineering, gem processing, defence manufacturing, metallurgy, nuclear fuel, chemicals, and medical equipment, adding that the establishment of the consulate would further enhance technological, scientific, economic, and trade collaboration.

In a written statement, Denis Pasler, governor of the Sverdlovsk Region, emphasized that launching a new diplomatic mission would reinforce ties with Indian regions.

He pointed out that energy, metallurgy, mineral extraction and processing, and pharmaceuticals are key sectors for cooperation with the South Asian nation.
