COP30 ends with compromise deal, unmet climate goals

(MENAFN) Delegates at this year’s COP30 climate summit wrapped up their negotiations with a last-minute agreement, but reports indicate that the final outcome failed to live up to the strong expectations held by many participants, advocacy groups, and environmental organizations.

Despite calls from more than 80 nations gathered in Belem, Brazil for a global plan to phase out fossil fuels — widely recognized as the primary driver of human-caused climate change — the concluding document did not include such a commitment. And although the conference took place in the so-called “gateway to the Amazon,” the agreement introduced no substantial new initiatives to stop deforestation or strengthen protection of the Amazon rainforest, often referred to as “the lungs of the planet.”

"The venue bursting into flames couldn't be a more apt metaphor for COP30's catastrophic failure to take concrete action to implement a funded and fair fossil fuel phaseout," Jean Su, energy justice director at the Center for Biological Diversity, told US network ABC, commenting on the fire that broke out at the summit site on Thursday.

"These negotiations keep hitting a wall because wealthy nations profiting off polluting fossil fuels fail to offer the needed financial support to developing countries and any meaningful commitment to move first," she added.

Recognizing the dissatisfaction voiced by some delegates and environmental advocates over the lack of explicit plans to curb deforestation or transition off fossil fuels, COP30 President André Correa do Lago announced near the close of the forum that he would personally use his authority to draw up such roadmaps.

However, these proposed plans would carry no binding force, since they were not part of the formally adopted text and do not have the endorsement of all 195 participating nations.

According to general reports, an environmental research organization involved in the summit noted that while the nearly two-week gathering did achieve certain positive steps, it ultimately did not meet the ambitions of many of the delegates and climate campaigners in attendance.
