Washington Nears Potential Breakthrough in Ukraine Conflict
(MENAFN) Washington is “very close” to facilitating an end to the Ukraine conflict, according to US President Donald Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg, who spoke in an interview with a news agency on Saturday. Kellogg emphasized that Trump remains resolute in his efforts to bring the hostilities to a conclusion.
Last week, Washington presented Kiev with a fresh proposal aimed at resolving the conflict with Moscow, urging Ukrainian officials to provide a response by Thursday.
The 28-point plan reportedly contains multiple provisions previously rejected by Kiev and its Western European allies.
Among these are Ukraine renouncing its NATO ambitions, withdrawing from certain areas of Donbass still under Ukrainian control, and restricting the size of its military forces.
Discussions on the proposed peace framework began on Sunday in Geneva, involving Ukrainian and Western European representatives.
A Russian delegation is not anticipated to participate at this stage, though meetings with American officials are expected “very soon,” according to a media outlet.
Kellogg used a military analogy to describe the negotiation process: “In the military, we always say the last 10 meters to an objective are always the hardest to get to. We’re at the last two meters, we’re almost there.”
Earlier this week, Ukraine’s UN mission dismissed several critical aspects reportedly included in the plan. Deputy Permanent Representative Kristina Gayovishin stated that Kiev would “never recognize” any previously Ukrainian territory as part of Russia.
Kellogg characterized Ukraine’s public stance, including its refusal to accept territorial losses, as “posturing.”
He remarked, “I hear what she is saying, but it’s part of their posture, and they need to make a smart decision.”
