(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump accused Ukraine’s leadership on Sunday of showing “zero gratitude” for Washington’s attempts to bring the war with Russia to an end, while again placing responsibility for the conflict on his predecessor.

"Ukraine 'leadership' has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia," Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social.

He insisted that the war "would have never happened" with “strong and proper US and Ukrainian leadership,” asserting that it erupted during “the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration.” Trump also claimed that had the 2020 election not been “rigged and stolen,” the conflict would not exist, arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin “would never have attacked.”

Trump said he “inherited a war that should have never happened, a war that is a loser for everyone, especially the millions of people that have so needlessly died.”

These remarks coincided with ongoing discussions in Geneva between high-level US and Ukrainian officials over a 28-point American peace proposal.

According to general reports, the draft framework would require Ukraine to give up more territory to Russia, reduce the size of its armed forces, and formally give up its pursuit of NATO membership.

Trump emphasized that the proposal would not represent his “final offer,” and said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has until Thursday to issue a response.

Zelenskyy commented that he must choose between “loss of our dignity or the risk of losing a key partner.”

A day earlier, leaders from nine European countries, along with Japan, Canada, and EU officials, voiced concerns about provisions in the proposal that would restrict the size of Ukraine’s military, warning such limits “would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attack.”
