Ukrainian delegation thinks peace draft aligns national interests
(MENAFN) The White House said Sunday that high-level peace talks in Geneva represented a “significant step forward” toward a potential framework to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
The meetings included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, and senior Ukrainian officials, who carried out what was described as an “extensive and productive” review of the latest draft proposals under Trump’s peace plan.
According to the White House, discussions were "candid and detailed," with both sides working through key revisions to the emerging peace framework.
Ukrainian delegates indicated that their main priorities—including security guarantees, long-term economic development, infrastructure protection, freedom of navigation, and political sovereignty—were thoroughly addressed during the Geneva meeting.
"Ukrainian representatives stated that, based on the revisions and clarifications presented today, they believe the current draft reflects their national interests and provides credible and enforceable mechanisms to safeguard Ukraine’s security in both the near and long term," the statement said.
They emphasized the strengthened security guarantees, non-aggression commitments, energy-sector stability, and reconstruction measures as significant progress in the negotiations.
US officials reiterated that Washington remains committed to ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term prosperity remain central to the diplomatic process.
