Ukrainian Security Chief Rejects Claims of Shaping US Peace Initiative

(MENAFN) Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov on Friday refuted assertions that he engaged in negotiating or altering the draft of a US-led peace proposal during his recent trip to Washington, DC.

In a message shared on Telegram, Umerov characterized his function throughout the visit as "purely logistical."

He emphasized that "While on assignment in the US, my responsibilities were technical -- arranging meetings and preparing dialogues. I did not provide any assessments or, especially, approve any clauses. That falls outside my purview and violates procedures," stressing that his duties were limited to organizational tasks.

Rejecting circulating media narratives that he had "approved" or "deleted points" from the initiative, he added that "These are examples of unchecked information arising outside the context of consultations."

Umerov issued his clarification shortly after Ukrainian parliamentarian Oleksiy Honcharenko revealed on Nov. 20 a list of 28 purported provisions that he said represented a revised peace blueprint from US President Donald Trump.

Umerov explained that technical delegations continue evaluating various suggestions while adhering to Ukraine’s enduring priorities—national sovereignty, citizen safety, and an equitable settlement.

In contrast to Umerov’s version of events, A US media platform reported that President Zelenskyy had empowered him to engage in discussions on the document with US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, whom the outlet described as one of the proposal’s principal designers.

The platform further asserted that several of Umerov’s remarks were integrated into the draft.
