The provincial government has moved the Peshawar Smart City initiative into the implementation phase, approving a series of major urban reforms during a high-level meeting chaired by Minister for Local Government Meena Khan Afridi. The meetin was attended by MNAs and MPAs elected from Peshawar, along with senior officials from the Local Government, C&W, Irrigation and other relevant departments.

Officials delivered detailed briefings on measures required to transform Peshawar into a smart, better-managed and people-friendly city. The meeting reviewed schemes related to sanitation, drainage, drinking water supply, road infrastructure, parks and other smart facilities.

To address chronic traffic blockages and sanitation issues, the participants approved the immediate relocation of illegal vegetable markets operating inside the city. Lawmakers were also asked to submit their recommendations for a new slaughterhouse and additional graveyards.

The forum also cleared a proposal to revive non-functional tube wells of the Public Health Engineering Department, directing the summary to be submitted to the secretary of Local Government. A significant policy decision was also taken to disallow open-air gyms in any park in the future, while no park in the city will be permitted to run free-of-charge services without official approval.

Lawmakers' suggestions were incorporated into the Smart City plan on the spot. Emphasizing collective responsibility, Meena Khan Afridi said,“Peshawar is the home of all Pakhtuns, and it is everyone's duty to make it a great city.”

The minister added that visible improvements would start emerging by June 2026, noting that proposals from MNAs and MPAs elected through Form-45 would be formally integrated into the project. She directed that all listings, designs and feasibility studies for the related schemes be completed at the earliest.

According to the minister, the Smart City initiative will bring transformational changes to urban life in Peshawar, improving essential services and long-term municipal management.
