US Republicans Move to Sanction Countries Trading with Russia

(MENAFN) US Republicans are in the process of drafting new legislation aimed at imposing sanctions on any nation that continues to engage in trade with Russia, according to President Donald Trump.

Since the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis, the United States and its allies have placed sweeping sanctions on Russia in an effort to damage its economy.

Moscow has consistently criticized these sanctions as ineffective and illegal, arguing that they ultimately harm the countries imposing them. Russia asserts that its economy has adapted by shifting its trade focus to non-Western markets.

“The Republicans are putting in legislation that is very tough sanctioning, et cetera, on any country doing business with Russia,” Trump shared with reporters on Sunday.

He added, “I hear they’re doing that, and that’s okay with me.” Furthermore, Trump remarked, “They may add Iran to that. I suggested it.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune indicated last month that he was prepared to bring to a vote a piece of legislation long championed by hawkish Senator Lindsey Graham, which would impose “crushing sanctions” on Russia.

However, Thune did not commit to a specific timeline for the vote. The proposed bill would grant Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other products, unless Russia agrees to a permanent peace with Ukraine.

The primary targets of the bill are China and India, two major consumers of Russian energy. Earlier this year, Trump also announced a 25% tariff on India, citing its continued purchase of Russian oil and its role in aiding Moscow’s prolonged conflict with Ukraine.
