BBC Vows to Challenge Trump Defamation Lawsuit

(MENAFN) The BBC is “determined to fight” any defamation lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump, according to chairman Samir Shah on Monday, as reported by British news sources.

Trump had previously accused the broadcaster of deceptively editing segments of his speech delivered before the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riot.

During a briefing with journalists on Friday, Trump indicated that his legal team would pursue action against the BBC for “anywhere between $1 billion and $5 billion, probably sometime next week,” despite the broadcaster issuing a formal apology.

This statement followed the BBC’s recent apology for broadcasting a documentary that edited Trump’s speech given just prior to the Capitol riot, when his supporters stormed the building during the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election win.

The network had acknowledged that the edit “gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.”

In a letter to employees reviewed by local media, Shah emphasized, “there is no basis for a defamation case and we are determined to fight this.”

He added, “We are, of course, acutely aware of the privilege of our funding and the need to protect our license fee payers, the British public,” highlighting concerns over potential legal and settlement expenses.

On Sunday, former BBC director general Tony Hall shared similar views, asserting that the broadcaster should not settle, noting that any payout would essentially come from public funds.
