Ukraine secures deal for hundred French rafale jets— Zelensky

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday announced that Ukraine has placed an order for 100 Dassault Rafale fighter jets under a deal signed with French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Ukraine has just placed a historic order for 100 Rafale fighter jets to equip its army,” Zelenskyy told journalists after signing a declaration of intent with Macron, according to state news agency Ukrinform. The signing took place at the Velizy-Villacoublay airbase near Paris and aims to enhance bilateral defense cooperation, particularly for Ukraine’s acquisition of defense equipment.

At a joint press briefing in Paris, Zelenskyy described the deal as a "historic" agreement set to last 10 years, beginning in 2026. Under the agreement, Ukraine will also receive an unspecified number of "very powerful" French radars and eight SAMP/T air defense systems, each equipped with six launchers.

"It is very valuable that France is taking such a step to achieve real, guaranteed security in Europe," Zelenskyy said, noting that he and Macron also met with defense company representatives to discuss “specific details” of technological cooperation.

In addition, Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia will purchase 55 new electric locomotives from French manufacturer Alstom SA to strengthen Ukraine’s logistics capabilities.

He thanked Macron for a "new defense package that is being prepared at the end of this year," saying it “also strengthens Ukraine,” without providing further details.

Zelenskyy’s visit to France followed a trip to Athens, where Ukraine and Greece signed a letter of intent for US-supplied liquefied natural gas for the coming winter. He is scheduled to visit Spain on Tuesday.
