Erdogan commemorates Northern Cyprus founding anniversary
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday marked the 42nd anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
In a message shared on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Erdogan stated: “I commemorate our heroic martyrs with mercy and express my gratitude to our veterans. We will never abandon our national cause, Cyprus,” and extended congratulations to the Turkish Cypriots. He added that Ankara will continue to reinforce its solidarity with the Turkish Cypriot community in every possible way.
On the occasion of TRNC’s Republic Day on November 15, TRNC President Tufan Erhurman highlighted the decades-long struggle of Turkish Cypriots to protect their existence, identity, and rights on the island. He emphasized the TRNC’s continued determination to pursue a solution that ensures lasting stability and peace on Cyprus and across the region.
Cyprus has faced a prolonged dispute between Greek and Turkish Cypriots despite repeated UN-led efforts for a comprehensive settlement. Ethnic violence in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots into enclaves for safety. In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aiming for union with Greece prompted Türkiye’s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots, eventually leading to the TRNC’s founding in 1983.
The island has experienced intermittent peace initiatives, including a failed 2017 process in Switzerland mediated by Türkiye, Greece, and the UK. In 2004, the Greek Cypriot administration joined the EU, simultaneously blocking a UN plan designed to resolve the long-standing conflict.
