India’s Modi Hails NDA Victory
(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to political allies on Friday after a coalition led by his ruling party achieved a majority in a local election in Bihar, one of India’s most densely populated states.
The Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already captured more than 200 seats in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, even as vote counting continues.
The prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which contested 101 seats in partnership with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), has emerged as the largest single party, despite never having governed Bihar independently.
The NDA’s combined seat count exceeding 200 ensures Kumar a fifth term as chief minister.
Bihar sends 40 representatives to India’s lower house of Parliament, making it a strategic region for any governing coalition in New Delhi.
“People of Bihar [have] voted for development. They have broken all records,” Modi stated while addressing his party workers at BJP headquarters in New Delhi.
He also shared a post on X congratulating the NDA coalition, describing the outcome as a triumph of “good governance,” “development” and “social justice.”
The opposition, led by the Indian National Congress and regional socialist parties under the banner of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’, or Grand Alliance, is projected to secure just over 35 seats.
Voting occurred in two phases, on November 6 and November 11, reflecting the large scale and complexity of the election.
