Thailand Says Trade Negotiations with U.S. Will Proceed
(MENAFN) Thailand announced Saturday that trade negotiations with the United States will proceed as planned and remain isolated from escalating border hostilities with Cambodia.
The announcement follows conflicting signals from Washington. Earlier, Thailand's Foreign Ministry disclosed that the US had temporarily halted trade discussions pending Bangkok's reaffirmation of its ceasefire commitment with Cambodia.
However, Thai government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat reported that US President Donald Trump informed Thailand's premier that Washington "does not wish to interfere in the Thailand-Cambodia issue" under current bilateral arrangements, according to media.
"The tariff negotiations will move forward and remain separate from border issues," Siripong stated.
The clarification emerged following a late Friday night telephone conversation between Trump and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Siripong's remarks came just hours after Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura revealed that Bangkok had received correspondence from the US Deputy Trade Representative on Friday announcing a temporary suspension of negotiations under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade Framework.
Washington and Bangkok unveiled a framework last month designed to maintain a 19% tariff rate on Thai exports while identifying specific products eligible for tariff modifications.
Tensions flared Wednesday when cross-border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia resulted in one civilian death and three injuries. Both nations have attributed blame to the other, with the violence erupting mere days after Thailand withdrew from a peace agreement.
The Southeast Asian neighbors signed that accord last month in Kuala Lumpur with Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim present as witnesses.
On July 28, Cambodia and Thailand reached an unconditional ceasefire agreement during a trilateral summit hosted by Anwar, concluding weeks of armed conflict.
