Algeria Forest Fires Successfully Contained
(MENAFN) Algerian emergency crews successfully controlled all active forest fires nationwide, including a significant conflagration in Tipaza province west of Algiers, government authorities announced Saturday.
The Civil Protection Agency confirmed firefighters suppressed 55 separate blazes spanning 14 provinces across western, central, and eastern territories since Friday morning operations commenced.
Five locations remain under active surveillance due to potential flare-up risks, the agency disclosed in an official statement.
In Tipaza, responders extinguished fires ravaging the forests of Boukhlidja, Amarsha, Bouzoula, Shoula, and Douar al-Ikhwa Marsili, with patrol units maintaining presence in select zones.
Fire containment operations also succeeded in Chlef province in the west; Tizi Ouzou, Medea, Ain Defla, Bouira, and Boumerdes in central regions; and Bejaia, Jijel, Skikda, Mila, Setif, Souk Ahras, and Tebessa in eastern areas, according to the statement.
Algeria's meteorological service projects substantial temperature decreases in upcoming days, following conditions that accelerated fire propagation. Rainfall is anticipated Monday, with snowfall forecasted later in the week.
Multiple Algerian provinces, particularly Tipaza, experienced sudden large-scale wildfire outbreaks recently, fueled by abnormally hot and arid winds atypical for the current season, triggering widespread evacuations.
Officials have not revealed the fires' origin, though northern territories have endured an unusual heat wave in recent days.
Temperatures in the capital, Algiers, surpassed 31°C (87.8°F) on Thursday—exceptionally elevated for a coastal Mediterranean metropolis that ordinarily experiences substantial rainfall and mountain snowfall during this period.
Algeria has endured severe drought conditions exceeding six years, predominantly affecting central and western regions.
Recurring drought cycles since 2022 have generated unprecedented fires, claiming dozens of lives, injuring hundreds, and destroying tens of thousands of hectares of forest and vegetation cover.
