According to the German government, the leaders also discussed the situation of Ukrainian refugees, including the recent rise in the number of young Ukrainian men leaving for the European Union.

Zelensky also thanked Merz for Germany's support, especially in bolstering Ukraine's air defense and protecting its energy infrastructure.

Chancellor Merz and President Zelensky agreed to continue joint efforts toward a ceasefire and lasting peace in close coordination with European and transatlantic partners. Germany, together with its Western partners, will increase pressure on Moscow to compel Russia to enter into serious negotiations. This includes continuing work on a more effective use of Russia's immobilized state assets.
