Typhoons Fung-wong Leave Over 250 Dead in Philippines


(MENAFN) The combined death toll from Typhoon Fung-wong and Typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines has risen to 259, with 114 individuals still reported missing nationwide, according to state-run media.

Last week, Typhoon Kalmaegi battered Cebu province along with multiple locations in the Central Visayas region, resulting in 232 fatalities, 112 missing persons, and 523 injuries.

Over 4.1 million people were affected, a news agency reported, citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The storm inflicted severe damage on roads and infrastructure, impacting almost 135,000 homes, with 20,510 of them completely destroyed.

Typhoon Fung-wong, which made landfall Friday night and left the Philippine Area of Responsibility by early Tuesday, claimed 27 lives, injured 36 people, and left two individuals missing.

Authorities reported that the typhoon impacted more than 4.4 million residents across 15 regions, including Central Luzon, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and Western Visayas.

Over 800,000 displaced citizens are currently taking refuge in approximately 11,800 evacuation centers within the affected areas.

The storm caused further destruction to roads and bridges, while numerous towns and cities continue to experience power and water supply interruptions.

The Education Department confirmed that nearly 3,000 schools suffered damage due to the typhoon, with 1,238 of these institutions completely destroyed.
