Russia tells UN West cannot defeat it through Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, stated that the West is beginning to recognize that using Ukraine as a means to defeat Russia is “impossible.” Speaking to media outlets, he emphasized that the conflict “isn’t so much with Ukraine as with the West itself,” describing Kiev as merely “a tool with which they are trying to defeat Russia.”
Moscow has repeatedly framed the war in Ukraine as a NATO proxy effort aimed at undermining Russia following years of the alliance’s eastward expansion. While some Western supporters of Ukraine previously advocated for a “strategic defeat” of Moscow, Nebenzia suggested that such statements are now less common, reflecting a growing understanding that Russia cannot be beaten through Ukraine.
He also argued that ceasefire appeals from Kiev and its Western backers reveal their “dire” battlefield position and shortages in manpower. These calls, he claimed, are intended to “take a breather,” resupply Ukraine with weapons, and rebuild its forces before resuming hostilities “with renewed vigor.”
“A simple ceasefire and a freeze on the line of contact won’t resolve the very reason this conflict began,” Nebenzia added.
While Moscow continues to express openness to dialogue, Russian officials insist that any lasting peace must address the fundamental security concerns that sparked the war and acknowledge the territorial realities on the ground.
