Egypt Begins First Phase of Parliamentary Elections
(MENAFN) Egypt commenced the initial stage of its parliamentary elections on Monday, aiming to select members for the House of Representatives, according to local media reports.
A state-run news channel reported that nearly 63 million eligible voters will participate in choosing 568 members of the House of Representatives across two stages.
The first phase of the elections spans two days and covers the provinces of Alexandria, Assiut, Aswan, Beheira, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Giza, Luxor, Matrouh, Minya, New Valley, Qena, Red Sea, and Sohag.
Voting will take place in 5,606 subcommittees distributed across 70 electoral districts.
A total of 1,287 candidates are contesting in this election, with 1,143 running independently under the individual system and 142 competing through the party list system.
Egypt’s House of Representatives has 596 seats, comprising 568 elected members—284 chosen via the closed-list system and 284 through the individual system—alongside 28 members appointed directly by a presidential decree.
Authorities indicated that the results of the first phase are expected to be announced on Nov. 18.
The Interior Ministry confirmed that a comprehensive security plan has been implemented to safeguard all polling stations.
Voting for Egyptians abroad was conducted on Nov. 7-8 at embassies and consulates in 117 countries, according to the government media center.
The second phase of the elections is scheduled for Nov. 21-22 for expatriates and Nov. 24-25 for voters in the remaining 13 provinces, with the results to be released on Dec. 2.
