Nine people go missing after boat overturned in S. Korea

(MENAFN) A Chinese fishing boat capsized off South Korea’s southwestern coast on Monday, leaving nine crew members missing.

The 99-ton vessel, carrying 11 people, overturned around 150 km (93 miles) southwest of Eocheong Island at 8:53 a.m. local time (2353 GMT Sunday), according to the Gunsan Coast Guard. Two crew members were rescued by a passing cargo ship.

Seoul has dispatched four patrol vessels and helicopters to search for the missing sailors.

This incident follows another capsizing of a Chinese fishing boat near Gageo Island on Sunday, which left three missing and two in cardiac arrest, with six rescued. Authorities continue to monitor maritime safety amid rising incidents in the region.
