Syrian President visits Washington, signaling shift in US ties

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington on Monday marks a significant step in US-Syria relations, the first major engagement since the civil war began over a decade ago.

Experts say the visit signals Washington’s interest in a stable Syria and a rejection of policies aimed at undermining its government.

Al-Sharaa is expected to formalize Syria’s participation in the US-led coalition against ISIS, providing the United States a structured channel for counterterrorism coordination. Analysts also note that the move could strengthen Damascus’ negotiating position with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as integration talks continue.

The meeting follows President Trump’s earlier lifting of most US sanctions on Syria, though Caesar Act sanctions remain. Experts argue that fully removing these measures is crucial to attracting private investment and rebuilding the war-torn economy, as Syria seeks independence from humanitarian aid dependence.

Integration of the SDF into Syrian state institutions, agreed to in March, is another key focus, with progress contingent on recognition of Damascus’ sovereignty and control over border and resource management.

Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its presence in the Golan Heights and launched strikes across Syria following Assad’s fall, further complicating regional dynamics. Analysts stress that a stable Syrian government benefits regional security, limiting opportunities for Iran-aligned actors and reducing risks of instability that could threaten neighboring states.
