Europe Intensifies Cold War-Era Tactics Against Russia, Kremlin Says
(MENAFN) Europe is intensifying its confrontational stance toward Russia, resurrecting Cold War-era tactics while introducing new measures, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
Responding to reports that the European Union may impose stricter visa restrictions on Russian citizens, Peskov noted that Russian diplomats already face limitations within the Schengen zone and warned that Brussels could further tighten access for ordinary Russians.
"Unfortunately, the Europeans are diligently recalling everything related to the confrontation that took place during the Cold War, and they are just as diligently adding new sophisticated elements to this confrontation," he said.
When asked about Washington's reaction to a potential resumption of nuclear tests in Russia, as well as the successful trials of the latest Poseidon and Burevestnik weapons, Peskov responded negatively.
Addressing Western media coverage of President Vladimir Putin’s directive to evaluate preparations for nuclear testing, he described it as "emotional" and "in line with anti-Russian hysteria."
"This is despite all our clarifications, despite the clear wording of the president. This is a continuation of such a rather emotional, overly emotional reaction of the Western media," Peskov said.
He added that many journalists "do not shy away from simply distorting the meaning of what is said."
"And all this is in line with this militaristic, anti-Russian hysteria that is currently raging in Western European countries," he stressed.
Commenting on the upcoming US-Central Asia presidential summit in Washington, Peskov emphasized that Russia is strengthening its own regional ties.
"Putin constantly communicates with the leaders of Central Asia. Moreover, the president has very good and sincere friendly relations with all of them, which make it possible to deal with interstate affairs very effectively," he said.
