Trump signals possibility to denuclearize with Russia, China

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he may be exploring a plan to pursue denuclearization in coordination with Russia and China.

Last week, Trump instructed the Department of War to begin preparations for nuclear testing, asserting that the US is “the only country that doesn’t test.” In reaction, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov proposed initiating preparations for full-scale nuclear tests, while President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow has long committed to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, provided other countries comply.

Speaking at a business forum in Miami, Trump said: “We redid our nuclear – we’re the number one nuclear power, which I hate to admit, because it’s so horrible.” He added: “Russia’s second. China’s a distant third, but they’ll catch us within four or five years. We’re maybe working on a plan to denuclearize, the three of us. We’ll see if that works.”

Trump has accused Russia and China of conducting “secret” nuclear tests, although both countries have denied the claims. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s chief has also stated that there is no evidence either country has detonated a nuclear device.

Following the US president’s remarks, a Kremlin spokesperson noted that Moscow is awaiting further “clarifications from the American side” regarding the potential scope and implications of the proposed plan, according to reports.
