Syria’s FM Meets with President of Iraq’s Northern Kurdish Region
(MENAFN) Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with Nechirvan Barzani, president of Iraq’s northern Kurdish region, on Saturday in Germany during the Munich Security Conference to discuss reconstruction and economic cooperation. The two officials focused on Syria’s postwar reconstruction and economic situation, emphasizing the importance of strengthening development and economic ties in the coming period.
Barzani reiterated his support for Syria’s unity and stability, describing them as essential for both Syria and Iraq’s Kurdish region. He also praised steps taken by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, particularly a recent decree recognizing the cultural and linguistic rights of Syrian Kurds, addressing civil and legal issues for stateless residents, and resolving longstanding property disputes.
Earlier in January, the Syrian government reached a comprehensive agreement with the YPG/SDF to end internal divisions and integrate military forces in northeastern cities such as Hasakah and Qamishli, building on a previous deal signed on January 18.
