Trump Urges Mamdani to “Be Nice” After Heated Remarks
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump issued a cautionary message to New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, on Wednesday, telling him to "be nice" following his election win.
Trump suggested that Mamdani’s tone toward him seemed “very angry,” expressing disapproval of the incoming mayor’s remarks.
"I thought it was a very angry speech. Certainly angry toward me, and I think he should be nice to me. I'm sort of the one that has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he's off to a bad start," Trump commented during an interview with Fox News.
When asked about Mamdani’s statements during his victory address — in which he declared, "So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us" — Trump labeled the comment as "a very dangerous statement."
"I think it's a very dangerous statement for him to make. He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington. Because if he's not, he doesn't have a chance of succeeding, and I want to make him succeed -- I want to make the city succeed. I don't want to make him succeed. I want to make the city succeed, and we'll see what happens," the president elaborated.
Reflecting on the election’s results, Trump noted that he closely observed as "three pretty Democratic states" went to the polls, adding, "I would like to see the new mayor do well, because I love New York. I really love New York."
At 34, Mamdani triumphed over independent contender and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, as well as Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, on Tuesday.
His victory marks a historic moment, making him the first Muslim and South Asian individual to become mayor of the United States’ largest metropolis.
