GISR Hosts Jeffrey Sachs for Talk on Gaza Peace Deal and the future of the Arab World
(MENAFN- HBKU Media) Doha, November 5, 2025: The Global Institute for Strategic Research (GISR) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) hosted a talk examining the Gaza peace deal with renowned economist and global policy expert Jeffrey Sachs.
Held at Minaretein, Education City, the session titled ‘Gaza Peace Deal and the Future of the Arab World,’ explored the prospects and implications of the deal within the broader context of regional stability and international cooperation. The talk drew academics, policymakers, students, and members of Qatar’s diplomatic community, culminating in an interactive question-and-answer session.
During the talk, Professor Sachs, Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, drew on his extensive experience in public policy to highlight pathways to Arab unity and sustainable peace rooted in economic development, global governance, and multilateral diplomacy across the region.
Professor Sachs began by emphasizing that states cannot act alone to address shared global concerns. “One of the major themes of our world is the crucial strength of regionalism and regions coming together to solve challenges,” he stated.
The talk also examined the current state of the ceasefire, highlighting the divide between what the agreement has so far accomplished and its longer-term objectives. Additionally, he discussed the significant geopolitical implications of these developments on the future trajectory for the entire region.
Commenting on the significance of the talk, Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Ali Chihi, Executive Director, GISR, stated: “This talk offered valuable insights into how strategic cooperation and employing inclusive policies can pave the way for lasting stability. While the peace deal marks a historic milestone, its true test lies in implementation and ensuring that the aspirations and rights of Palestinians remain at the center. Hosting Professor Sachs reflects our commitment to fostering informed dialogue and bringing diverse perspectives to conversations that shape global peace and sustainable development.”
The event reflects HBKU’s role as a convening space for informed dialogue on pressing global issues. It also underscored GISR’s mission to advance strategic, evidence-based research and foster intricate understanding of complex geopolitical challenges.
