Afghanistan Earthquake: 27 Dead, Nearly 1,000 Injured

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has announced the completion of rescue operations in provinces affected by the recent earthquake in northern Afghanistan, stating that 27 people have been confirmed dead and 956 others injured.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck around 1:00 a.m. local time on Monday, with its epicenter in Kholm district of Balkh province. Tremors were also felt in Kabul, Baghlan, Samangan, Sar-i-Pul and Kunduz provinces.

Sharafat Zaman, spokesman for the MoPH, said in a statement on Monday that following the earthquake, the Islamic Emirate launched rescue operations in the affected areas, which have now concluded.

“According to the compiled statistics, the death toll from the incident stands at 27, while 956 others have been injured,” he added.

The statement detailed that 13 people were killed and 418 injured in Samangan, 12 killed and 435 injured in Balkh, one killed and 19 injured in Baghlan, 65 injured in Kunduz, one killed and 16 injured in Sar-i-Pul, and three injured in Jawzjan.

Zaman said hospitals in the northern provinces have implemented the necessary measures to treat the injured and that the treatment process is ongoing in an organized manner.

He emphasized that the MoPH has mobilized all available resources to provide emergency medical services to the victims and mobile medical teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to assist those in need.
