Trump signals renewal of nuclear testing, Putin warns of retaliation

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his intention to restart nuclear testing, following the successful launch of a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile by the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of “appropriate retaliatory measures” if the US violates the moratorium on nuclear tests.

Last week, Trump directed the US Department of War to begin preparations for nuclear testing “immediately.” On Wednesday, the US Air Force announced the successful test-firing of an unarmed Minuteman III from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

Trump said in a video shared on Truth Social: “Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our nuclear weapons on an equal basis.

That process will begin immediately.” The clip appeared AI-generated and repeated word-for-word the text from his earlier post, including the sign-off: “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
It is unclear whether the video was posted by Trump personally or by aides, as the White House declined to comment due to staff shortages caused by the ongoing government shutdown.

Several other clips shared around the same time showed identical backgrounds and reused unrelated past statements.

Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said Moscow “must respond to Washington’s steps” and “start preparing for full-scale nuclear tests immediately,” though Putin described such action as premature if Washington continues to observe the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. He instructed government agencies to evaluate US plans and provide proposals on “the possible commencement of work on preparing for nuclear weapons tests.”

Trump’s announcement follows recent Russian weapons trials, including the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile and the Poseidon underwater drone, though neither involved actual nuclear detonations. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified that Trump’s planned testing would not involve live nuclear explosions, describing them as “non-critical tests” within a broader modernization program.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia had been informed in advance about the Minuteman III launch and is still awaiting “clarifications from the American side” regarding the full implications of Trump’s remarks.
