 Workshop Held On Combating Illegal Trade In Ivory
(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Department of Wildlife Development organized on Monday the National Workshop to Support Efforts to Combat Ivory Trafficking.
The workshop is part of Qatar's commitment to implementing the National Ivory Trade Control Plan, approved in 2018. The workshop was delivered by international expert Jonathan Bardoux, a leading specialist in issues related to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the combating of illegal wildlife trade, who has more than 40 years of experience in managing international agreements related to wildlife conservation.
The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of national task forces and strengthen coordination among entities involved in implementing the national plan. It focused on discussing the latest methods for enforcing the CITES Convention, mechanisms for combating wildlife-related crimes, inspection procedures at border crossings, and international cooperation frameworks to curb the illegal trade in ivory and other wildlife products.
The event saw broad participation from relevant national authorities, including the General Authority of Customs, the Ministry of Interior, Hamad International Airport, the Civil Aviation Authority, Qatar Airways, and the Municipality and Environment Prosecution, underscoring the importance of the integrated efforts and inter-agency coordination in addressing the issue of illicit ivory trade.
