Marycarmen Lara-Villanueva is a PhD Candidate at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Her doctoral research is anchored in anti-colonial frameworks, and it explores anti-Black racism and anti-Indigenous racism in Mexico and how these are produced and learned in schools through visual culture. Through a lens shaped by theories of racial capitalism, and visuality, she explores the role of state-sanctioned educational materials in shaping racialized ways of seeing.
