Merz pledges to strengthen Germany’s ties with Turkey

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed on Thursday to strengthen Germany’s partnership with Türkiye, highlighting the unique and multifaceted nature of ties between the two nations during his visit to Ankara.

“Türkiye and Germany share special and diverse relations — in foreign and security policy, as well as in migration, energy, and trade,” Merz wrote in a post on social media before his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The chancellor emphasized his determination to enhance cooperation, saying, “I want to further expand our close partnership. That’s why I’m in Ankara meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdogan.”

Merz, who took office in May after forming a new coalition government, is making his first official visit to Türkiye. His spokesman described the trip as “highly important,” noting that it provides an opportunity to discuss a range of key bilateral and international issues, including energy cooperation, regional security, and migration policy.
