Putin says nation prepared to halt operations against Ukrainian units
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin stated Wednesday that Moscow is prepared to temporarily halt operations against encircled Ukrainian forces in Kupyansk and Krasnoarmeysk to allow media representatives access to the areas.
Putin announced that Russian forces have fully surrounded Ukrainian troops in Kupyansk, a city in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, and in Krasnoarmeysk in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov previously reported that approximately 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers are encircled near Kupyansk, with another 5,500 trapped near Krasnoarmeysk.
“The political leadership of Ukraine must make a decision on the fate of its citizens which are currently encircled,” Putin said, cautioning Kiev against provocations while media are present.
The Russian chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, had earlier noted that Moscow was continuing operations to eliminate the trapped forces. Putin confirmed that combat would cease during media coverage, including for foreign journalists.
