UN Warns Global Temperatures Will Surpass Paris Agreement Limits
(MENAFN) The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sounded an urgent alarm on Tuesday, saying the world has failed to curb global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F) and must take immediate action to prevent irreversible harm.
Speaking to media ahead of the COP30 climate summit in November, Guterres called it “inevitable” that global temperatures will surpass the Paris Agreement target, unleashing “devastating consequences” worldwide.
He pressed global leaders, who are set to meet in Belem, a city in Brazil’s rainforest, to recognize the urgent need for emissions reductions. Delay, he warned, increases the risk of crossing catastrophic “tipping points” in critical ecosystems, including the Amazon, the Arctic, and the oceans.
“Let’s recognise our failure. The truth is that we have failed to avoid an overshooting above 1.5C in the next few years.
“And that going above 1.5C has devastating consequences. Some of these devastating consequences are tipping points, be it in the Amazon, be it in Greenland, or western Antarctica or the coral reefs," he stated.
Highlighting COP30’s central objective, the UN chief emphasized that the world must act swiftly to limit both the magnitude and duration of temperature increases above 1.5°C, to avert irreversible ecosystem collapse.
"We don’t want to see the Amazon as a savannah. But that is a real risk if we don’t change course and if we don’t make a dramatic decrease of emissions as soon as possible," Guterres added.
