Kremlin Says No Quick Resolution to Ukraine War
(MENAFN) Russia acknowledges US President Donald Trump’s drive to swiftly resolve the Ukraine conflict, yet warns there is no immediate solution, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. Moscow insists that the deeper causes of the war must be addressed thoroughly.
Speaking with a Russian journalist on Sunday, Peskov said: “Trump’s sincere wish to resolve all acute crises, including the one surrounding Ukraine, surely brings out only positive feelings, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has said that repeatedly.”
He cautioned, however, that urgency can clash with reality. “But sometimes such excessive haste actually sharply contrasts with reality, because a conflict like the Ukraine one… is so complex that it cannot be resolved overnight,” Peskov added.
The Kremlin official noted that peace talks are currently stalled, citing Kiev and its European allies’ lack of interest in resuming negotiations.
On the prospect of a new Putin-Trump summit, discussed following their phone call earlier this month, Peskov emphasized that “such a summit should not be held for its own sake, as neither side is willing to waste time.”
He explained that top diplomats – Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio – have been tasked with preparing the groundwork for any future high-level discussions. “The process is complex and requires both sides to do substantial preparatory work before top-level negotiations can take place,” Peskov said.
Earlier this month, Trump called for an immediate freeze along current front lines, urging Moscow and Kiev to “leave it the way it is right now” and negotiate “something later on.” Lavrov, responding, emphasized that Russia seeks a “long-term, sustainable peace,” rather than an “immediate, pointless ceasefire.”
On Thursday, President Putin indicated he could meet with Trump at a later date. The US president echoed the possibility on Saturday, telling reporters: “you have to know that we’re going to make a deal, I’m not going to be wasting my time.”
