(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that a potential agreement regarding TikTok's ownership in the United States with China "might" be finalized during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week.

"We might. That'll be one of the things we're discussing," Trump shared with reporters aboard Air Force One, en route from Malaysia to Japan as part of his tour of Asia. When asked whether he intended to sign the final agreement, Trump confirmed his anticipation of a resolution.

Trump revealed that he had already received "an original approval from President Xi" and expects further approval soon, though he prefers to "wait till a couple of days" before making any definitive announcements.

"We're going to have a great talk ... and we're going to have ... a successful transaction for both countries," he added optimistically.

On Sunday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent disclosed that the agreement regarding TikTok had been reached in discussions with China, and it would be "for the two leaders to consummate that transaction on Thursday in (South) Korea."

Trump is scheduled to meet with Xi on Thursday during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, where the two are expected to address issues such as tariffs, trade, fentanyl, US agricultural products, and rare earths.

In September, Trump signed an executive order allowing TikTok to continue operating in the United States under a revised corporate structure with American investors. However, the specifics of this arrangement have not yet been made public.

Initially, a ban on the app was set to take effect on January 20, but Trump extended this deadline four times while his administration worked on finalizing a deal for a change in ownership.
