Six Go Missing as Boat Capsizes Off Indonesia’s East Kalimantan

(MENAFN) Six people remain missing and eight others survived after a fishing vessel carrying 14 crew members capsized off Indonesia’s East Kalimantan province, officials confirmed Monday.

The vessel, identified as KM Mina Maritim 148, went down amid severe weather conditions on Sunday in the waters near Talisayan, Berau Regency, according to Dody Setiawan, head of the Balikpapan Search and Rescue Office, as cited by a state news agency.

Setiawan said that “a joint rescue team is still conducting an intensive search for those missing.”

Maritime travel remains a common mode of transportation across Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands, though inadequate safety measures frequently contribute to sea accidents.
