Erdogan, Trump Hold Phone Talks on Regional Developments

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone call with US President Donald Trump on Sunday to address rapidly evolving regional developments in the wake of military strikes against Iran, a senior official confirmed.

"The latest situation and current developments in Iran and the Gulf countries," were discussed by the two leaders, Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran wrote Sunday on US social media company X.

The high-level exchange comes as Ankara intensifies its diplomatic push to contain escalation and foster dialogue across a Middle East increasingly rattled by the military confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with neighboring Gulf states also drawn into the widening sphere of international concern.

The US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Tehran in the early hours of Saturday, blindsiding ongoing nuclear negotiations that had been proceeding under Oman's mediation — the latest round of which had concluded just two days earlier in Geneva on Thursday.

The assault represents the second major military intervention targeting Iranian nuclear infrastructure in under a year. The US had previously struck three Iranian nuclear facilities during a 12-day war between Israel and Iran last June.

Erdogan's outreach to Trump signals Turkey's intent to position itself as a key diplomatic intermediary amid one of the most volatile flashpoints the region has seen in years.
