UN Urges Renewed Global Unity As Afghan Women's Rights Crisis Deepens
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan has reiterated its commitment to working with all Afghan parties in support of inclusive governance, human rights, and international cooperation.
In a statement issued on 24 October, marking United Nations Day, the mission said its engagement is aimed at safeguarding human rights and strengthening global solidarity with the Afghan people. It did not, however, specify which groups it is currently engaging with, or whether that includes opponents of the Taliban.
For nearly four years, the global community and regional stakeholders have consistently pressed the Taliban to form a representative and inclusive government-appeals that the group has continued to reject.

Women and Girls Under Growing Pressure
The UN mission expressed alarm over the worsening situation of women and girls in Afghanistan, where restrictions on education, employment, and public participation have effectively erased decades of social progress. These measures, it said, undermine both the fundamental rights of Afghan citizens and the nation's long-term stability.
The statement reaffirmed the UN's enduring commitment to peace, justice, and sustainable development, highlighting that the organisation has stood beside the Afghan people“through both progress and hardship.”
UN's Continued Role and Challenges
According to the statement, the UN's agencies and partners continue to deliver education, healthcare, clean water, and livelihood support to millions across Afghanistan. It underscored that protecting the rights of women and girls remains central to its mission.
Yet the humanitarian crisis remains one of the world's most severe, with roughly two-thirds of Afghans still dependent on aid. Dwindling donor support, climate-related shocks, and the mass return of migrants have intensified economic and social strain, the UN warned.
The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General noted that Afghanistan cannot achieve stability or development in isolation. She called for strengthened regional cooperation and global engagement, adding that the UN remains a crucial platform for dialogue and collective action in support of Afghans' aspirations.
The UN mission reaffirmed that, under its Security Council mandate, it will continue to engage with all Afghan actors to promote inclusive governance and uphold human rights.
