Open-Source Racer Supertuxkart 1.5 Arrives With Major Enhancements
The free, cross-platform karting game SuperTuxKart has officially released version 1.5, bringing a suite of graphic upgrades and performance enhancements as the project transitions into its next major chapter. The announcement by the development team highlights this as the final update of the 1. x series and sets the stage for the forthcoming“Evolution” version.
Among the headline changes in version 1.5 are enhanced rendering capabilities, including supersample antialiasing support and soft shadows which cater to high-end GPUs. According to the team's blog, SSAA permits the game to render at a resolution above the native display, allowing significant smoothing at the cost of heavier processing. Also new is improved display of karts, tracks and game modes - users will need to scroll less, thanks to more efficient layout and interface tweaks.
The project's Vulkan renderer has been substantially improved, moving it closer to parity with the OpenGL default path, though the latter remains the default for compatibility. Additional features include new“egg-hunt” easter-type events on tracks such as Black Forest, Gran Paradiso Island and The Old Mine, meant to bring extra replayability to the game.
A key internal change is the shift in the team's organisation and tooling ahead of the ambitious next version, dubbed SuperTuxKart Evolution. The blog post dated 27 August 2025 reveals that disagreements within the project had delayed previous work, as one contributor noted: the 1.5 release“was ready since April but delayed endlessly” due to internal conflicts and a desire to add more Vulkan updates. To address this, the project has established new governance practices:“at least 2, and preferably 3, trusted persons” will now have access to critical resources such as the domain, servers and code hosting.

The team outlines multiple new tracks, a completely revamped Story mode featuring over 40 challenges, smarter racing AI, at least three new power-ups, and improved models and textures.
In terms of language support, version 1.5 adds full translations for languages such as Filipino, Rusyn and Welsh, and partial support for Hindi, Bengali and Georgian, alongside appropriate fonts. For users on diverse hardware, the integrated benchmark mode remains a standout addition from the beta phase, allowing players to evaluate performance settings and compare system results.
The timing of the release is noteworthy. The first beta dropped October 2024, the release candidate for 1.5 arrived May 2025, and the final stable release was posted on 20 October 2025. The drawn-out schedule was influenced by the desire to deliver a polished final release for the 1. x series, with the blog acknowledging“more changes than we initially anticipated” and contributors juggling commitments outside the game itself.
For current players of version 1.4, the 1.5 update appears to focus more on visual and UX refinements rather than dramatic gameplay shifts: physics, tracks and power-ups remain largely compatible with earlier versions, preserving continuity as advertised. At the same time, the announcement emphasises that“development moves on to SuperTuxKart Evolution” and that 1.5 effectively serves as a polish milestone before a more substantive leap.
In practical terms, players can access version 1.5 binaries for Linux, Windows, macOS and Android from the project's download page. The community forum has also been revamped: a new forum was officially opened with the release of 1.5-rc2, replacing the previous FreeGameDev-hosted board, as part of the project's effort to improve developer-community interaction.
